Material and performance
Every wheel is printed in Bambu Lab PC FR, a flame-retardant polycarbonate.
Heat
The material holds its shape up to a heat deflection temperature of 113 °C
(Vicat softening point 114 °C, manufacturer's figures). That is a wide margin over the warmth
at the top of a shade lit with LED bulbs, which we recommend. Incandescent and halogen bulbs run
far hotter: if you use them, keep the wattage modest and check that the wheel is no more than warm
to the touch after an hour.
Fire
The filament is rated UL 94 V-0, the highest flame-retardancy class for
3D-printing filament, so it self-extinguishes rather than continuing to burn. The rating is for
the material; the wheels are not UL-listed lamp components.
Strength
Polycarbonate with toughness the maker compares to carbon-fibre nylon. The spokes are printed
flat, in their strongest direction, and meet the hub and rim in rounded joints rather than sharp
corners, so stress spreads instead of concentrating. Designed for the weight of a stained-glass
shade. The threaded hub takes standard 1/8-IP lamp hardware: tighten by hand, no tools.
